Steve founded the Seattle Drum School in 1986 and has been teaching lessons for over 50
years. He holds Bachelor of Arts in Music and Master of Music degrees from Central
Washington University where he studied percussion and jazz with renowned educator John
Moawad. He has studied privately with Dom Famularo, Jim Chapin, David Garibaldi,
Freddie Gruber, Derico Watson, Will Kennedy, and four-time world champion Scottish snare
drummer, John Scullion.
Over the years Steve has performed with such artists as guitarist Roger Fisher (Heart), saxophonist Hank Crawford, organist Jimmy McGriff, and many
highly regarded local and regional players. He currently performs with his eclectic
instrumental rock band the 350s, folk rock quartet 3 Track Mind, and as a duo with his wife
Kristy (Steve and Kristy Smith), as well as hosting a weekly jazz session with his longtime
friends Jon Alberts and Paul Gabrielson plus a rotating cast of guest musicians.
In addition to helping cultivate many top local players, teachers, and happy amateurs some
of Steve’s students have gone on to play with such acts as Death Cab For Cutie, R.E.M.,
Blue Man Group, Blind Melon, Fitz & The Tantrums, King Crimson, Smoosh (now called
Chaos Choas), Tangerine, Wayne Horvitz, and the nationally recognized
Roosevelt High School, Garfield High School, and Mountlake Terrace High School Jazz
Bands.
